History

The Cavapoo is a King Charles Cavalier crossed with a Poodle. They were first bred in the United States in the 1950s. With the success of the Labradoodle and the Cockapoo in the USA there were other smaller breeds that were starting to be crossed. Breeds such as the Maltese and the Lhasa Apso were picked. This was to have a small manageable dog for allergy sufferers. The King Charles Cavalier is one of the most popular breeds for its loyal and affectionate nature. Their nature compliments that of the Poodle with its intelligence and gentle temperament. They were matched up for the characters and ever since have been increasingly popular.

Today

CavapooToday the Cavapoos are more popular than ever. Their quiet, laid back, affectionate nature makes them an ideal family dog. They are great with young children and have a lower energy level than the Cockapoo or the miniature Labradoodle making them perfect for first time dog owners.

Cavapoos can be one solid colour or can have complex markings. They also may have spots or freckles on the muzzle or legs. In addition, they may have patches over the eyes, on the cheeks, on the chest or under the tail. Cavapoos may also have a merle coat, where random portions are diluted to create a mottled appearance. This is because of the varied colours of both the Cavaliers and Poodles and the colours you can cross together.

Cavapoos are bred in two different heights – miniature and toy. The toy Cavapoos tend to grow to approx 12 inches to the shoulder where as the Miniatures can be up to 14 inches to the shoulder. It will depend on the height of the Cavalier as to which size Poodle she is mated with. We like to mate similar sized parents so the pregnancy and birth is as straight forward as possible.

The F1 Cavapoos tend to have a wavy / shaggy coat. They are low – non shedding and have similar temperaments to your Cavalier King Charles.
